Competitions

At Dunstable we have a wealth of experience in competition flying, whether that be in Cross-Country racing or Aerobatics. We can provide coaching from novices taking part in their first competition, right up to the most advanced levels.

We are proud to have produced several National Champions and members of the British Gliding Team, representing our country at both European and World championships over the years.

We also participate in the Inter-Club league, which is aimed at giving early cross-country pilots a flavour of competition conditions, in a very supportive environment. Clubs are divided into regions with each club in the region hosting a weekend for each “round”. Each club in the region can provide a team consisting of Novice, Intermediate and Pundit classes. We always try to allocate our Duo Discus high performance 2 seat glider, to each weekend with an experienced pilot to help provide opportunities to those who are interested in cross country flying or simply want to fly from another airfield.

The annual highlight of our cross-country calendar is the BGA-rated Dunstable Regionals competition, in which up to 60 gliders participate, split into two classes based on the gliders performance handicap.

We have also hosted National championships, typically for the Club Class or Juniors. In the past we have also held the 18m Nationals as well as the European Championship.

Dunstable is also the home of the annual Dan Smith Trophy, a glider aerobatics competition at national standard. This normally held in the spring.

As well as the formal events, we also have a number of other competitions for members, such as the Algek Cup (aerobatics), our Enterprise Week and even the occasional spot-landing competition! Whatever level of experience, there is always something available each year for everyone to compete in.

Our annual Regionals competition is a great place for first time competitors to compete whilst having fun. A strong performance here will improve the chances of the pilot being able to attend Nationals rated comeptitions.

The Dan Smith Aerobatic competition is not only a great start to the Spring, it is also the perfect opportunity to show off your skills. There are 3 classes for pilots to enter, depending on their skills.

Inter-Club League is a friendly contest aimed at allowing those interested in competition flying a flavour of the competition environment but in a way that is very much aimed at beginners but also allows for more experienced pilots in separate classes to take part and share their knowledge.

National rated competitions are where some of the countries best pilot attend, with the challange to find the next National Champions. They will be part of the shortlist offered the chance to represent Great Britain at International Competitions.

The “spot landing” competition, the least formal competition we hold at Dunstable. Landing in a pre-defined area, it is not only a great challenge for pilots of all abilities and at any level of training, but is also a valuable skill.
