London Gliding Club

launching

Glider flights start on the ground with proper preflight preparation

Once everybody is strapped in, and the preflight checks have been completed you're ready to launch

London Gliding Club uses two different methods of launching - both will get you airborne!

Aerotowing involves towing the glider behind a powerful towplane (tug). The glider pilot chooses when to release.

Winch launching uses a very long cable connected to a large winch at the other end of the runway. A winch launch at London Gliding Club is extremely fast, accelerating the glider to 60mph in seconds, and launching it to 800 feet.
