London Gliding Club

ICL

Interclub League is an informal and fun series of competition weekends. Every couple of weeks another gliding club in our region hosts a competition - and the after flight refreshments.

Pilots are grouped into 'classes' according to experience and suitable tasks are set. Just like in a regionals or nationals competition the fastest pilot wins the day, scoring points for their club. Although each club may only have one pilot representing them in each class, 'hors concours' pilots are very welcome! Infact, in 2006 we had enough Dunstable pilots at Gransden to field 3 full teams.

At each event the home team provides a competition director, task setter and met person and we all pray for good soaring conditions. Team points are awarded for positions in each class with winners awarded (for example) 6 points, second 5, and so on. Day winner prizes are usually awarded in each class. The overall winner at the end of the regional league events goes forward to the National Finals to meet the winning teams from all the other leagues.

The team includes one pilot in each class:

Novice for anyone with a Silver C who has not (as at 1st April) competed in a Regional, Inter-Services or Junior Nationals competition or flown a 300k flight that qualifies for Gold distance

Intermediate for anyone who has not (as at 1st April) competed in a Nationals level competition (except Junior or Overseas Nationals) or flown a 500k flight qualifying for Diamond distance.

Pundit open to anyone

Pilots can fly in higher classes if they want the challenge - and 'hors concours' pilots can fly in whatever class they like!

On a typical weekend Dunstable has up to six pilots competing (i.e. one for each class/day), plus several "hors concours" pilots coming along to enjoy a weekend flying at another club. It's a chance to mix both flying and socialising - usually involving a BBQ and plenty of liquid refreshment!

We are particularly keen to attract the latest new novices into the ICL. To fly as a novice you need your silver. You also need to have a chat with the CFI, who helps the captain with team selection.

We also need help with crewing - especially for novices. If you have a car & towbar and are happy to come along and support us (as we thrash the other clubs in the league) please get in touch!

2nd, 3rd, 4th of May - Hus Bos

If you would like to participate, as competitor, hors concours, or just to come along to visit another gliding club, get in touch with our intrepid Captain, Mark Davis. For the latest news keep an eye on the noticeboard!
