Learn to Fly at London Gliding Club

Becoming a glider pilot is challenging but incredible fun. Not only do you build the skills of controlling the aircraft, but you willalso develop the judgmental ability to decide how to conduct a safe flight in all conditions. Your first solo is an achievement you will never forget, but it’s really only the beginning of a programme of personal development towards becoming a qualified glider pilot, able to take your friends or family for a flight.

And from there the process of personal development continues and there is a series of national and international qualifications. Gliding is an immensely challenging yet rewarding sport and decades later you will find you are still learning. If you are interested in learning more, please don’t hesitate to speak to us - get in touch or come and visit us at the airfield.

Come and fly with us

Our Experience Flights and Courses make for a perfect introduction to the joy of gliding.

Whether you are a student considering a career in aviation, newly retired and looking for something new to inspire you, or just seeking a new outlet for your adventurous spirit, learning to pilot a glider at LGC can be the first step to fulfilling your dreams.

As a member you can arrive at the club any day (weather permitting!) to continue your training. There is a pre-booking system at weekends, whereas most midweek training is on a first-come-first-served basis. Generally members commit at least half a day at a time helping to get everything ready in the morning or putting it away at the end of the day.

PPL Holders

Already holding a PPL or being a paraglider will accelerate your training. Although it won’t reduce the flight time requirements, the experience you have gained will greatly help the learning process.

Unlike gaining a PPL, gliding is a very hands on learning experience. The only written exam you will take will be for your Bronze Badge, everything up to then will be done one on one with the instructors. Theory will be explained, demonstrated and then you will get to fly it. Most importantly learning to glide won’t break the bank.

Health and Fitness Guidelines

If you have good general health and can manage a walk in the country you will have no problem learning to glide. Please call us on 01582 663419 to discuss any congenital medical condition or disability.

You must be able to read a car number plate at 25 metres (with or without glasses).
